Overture 2012 has been commissioned by Dance Umbrella and is a world premiere, marking the return to the UK of choreographer Royston Maldoom whose work with young people has achieved international renown.
The young people taking part, some of whom will be experiencing dance for the first time, will work with Royston and his creative team to create a new contemporary dance piece, set to Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10. Royston’s gift for galvanising the energy and commitment of young people will result in a powerful and moving piece of dance. Combined with Shostakovich’s monumental music and the world-class playing of the LSO, this will be an unforgettable, and unmissable, evening in the theatre.
Royston’s passion for community dance has taken him throughout the world, often to areas of conflict. He believes that dance and performance can transform the lives of individuals and communities. In 2006, he was awarded an OBE for services to community dance throughout the world.
Overture 2012 is Dance Umbrella’s most ambitious project yet. We have raised over £100,000 so far, but there is still a long way to go to. Help us make the dream a reality...
